LEGISLATIVE ALERT
On Friday September 5, 2008, the Governor vetoed S.6457-A/Farley -
A.9393-A/Abbate which would have established a Task Force on Retiree
Health Insurance Protection as well as a one year moratorium on diminishing retiree health care benefits. However, the Governor stated
that he supported the legislation's goal: "to ensure that this State
continues to provide its public retirees with affordable and quality health care, even in this time of tight budgets."
The Governor went on to state that he will issue an Executive Order
creating a task force to further study this issue and report back before
the close of the next legislative session. That task force will include"representatives of public employee retirees, organized labor, local
governments, state agencies, the legislature and other interested parties.
We are disappointed that the Governor has vetoed the bill, particularly the moratorium provision which would have provided an important safeguard for retirees. The concerns he expressed, however, are understandable. It is interesting that he objected to the fact
that organized labor had more nominations than he did on the Task
Force.
We are extremely pleased that the Governor has made a commitment to create
a Task Force by Executive Order and we look forward to working with the
Governor in assuring that his Task Force accomplishes the purposes he
laid out in his Veto Message.

Welcome to RPEA
The Retired Public Employees Association represents the interests of retirees from government service in New York – retirees from State service as well as Counties, Cities, Towns, Villages and School Districts across New York.
We are working hard to make sure that the retirement income and benefits our members earned while in public service are safe.
We cannot allow a negative political or economic climate, either at the State or local level, reduce or destroy what our members earned.
RPEA has been doing this effectively for almost 40 years and we are good at it. In fact, we are the only organization whose single purpose is the interests of public service retirees.
